“In the Footsteps of Bella Kelly”
Past Event
This memorable exhibition features work by self-taught Mount Barker landscape artist Bella Kelly who travelled extensively throughout the Great Southern painting in her distinctive style ‘on country’. The authenticity of her work shone through and her work became very popular throughout the South West and is now extremely collectable.
Her preferred medium was watercolour on paper and Bella’s work was a representation of the evolving art of the Wheatbelt and Great Southern region.
Bella was 1988 Noongar NAIDOC artist of the year.
‘In the Footsteps of Bella Kelly’ is the result of a wonderful sponsored collaboration between Caroline Narkle, one of Bella’s daughters and other members of her family featuring Noongar and Wadjela artists working together over three Landcare Art Days, painting ‘on country’ in the Porongups.
The project was sponsored by Green Skills Inc, Koorabup Trust, Gondwana Link, Southern Ports, Shire of Katanning, Vancouver Arts and CBH Group together with local Aboriginal Elders, Community Groups and farmers.
